The question is then, why do you need spare keys at all? What is the use of using key cutting to have lots of spare copies of keys – particularly if you already have more than one copy of the key without getting more cut.

            There are countless uses of key cutting though and we will look at them here. The first is that it gives you a spare key for if you lose yours. If you lose every copy of your key then you would not be able to enter your home at all and that would mean of course that you needed to have your locks changed – which is a lot more hassle than just getting your keys copied. This is also why it is important to get your key cutting done early on – as if you lose the keys then this will mean it is too late to have key cutting done.

            Of course this would suggest you only need one spare copy of your key at any time, and if you have a housemate or family member with their own keys made then it might suggest that you don't need to get more key cutting.
